Inuvik and Fort-McPherson in the Northwest Territories are getting over $12.5 million for two renewable energy projects. A portion of this funding, totaling more than $5.5 million, will be used to add 1,000-kilowatt solar panels and battery backups to the Midnight Sun Complex in order to reduce energy costs and reliance on diesel and natural gas.
The Fort McPherson biomass project was designed to support the promotion of clean biomass within the community. The project involved the installation of a 85kW KOB tri-fuel system that could use cordwood, pellets, or wood chips as fuel. In the first season, the system generated 101,130kWh of heat, offsetting the need for 11,000L of heating oil. The biomass system was designed to handle 50% of the peak-heating load, while oil burners were used to supplement the remainder of the heat demand. The project provided heat to the Band Office and the community health center, and there were also plans to create a local biomass industry by producing wood chips.
